Erica grew up in Hyde Park, New York. That’s also the home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. She is a big fan of Eleanor and has read up extensively on her life and her influence. I was bouncing through eBay the other day and I saw that the US Mint had issued a memorial coin in honor of Miss Roosevelt a couple years ago. Being the magnanimous soul I am I ponied up the $1.17 for the quarter and shipping to surprise her.

There are two buildings that make up Capital Towers. We live in CT1 and found ourselves in the other building yesterday to drop something at the office. We walked over to check out their laundry facility. Erica has this amazing gift of finding money everywhere she goes. As she walked past a bank of washing machines she saw a quarter in the change slot. She quickly picked it up and deposited it in her pocket.

We got back to CT1 and got the mail. We walked upstairs and I was delighted to see my order had come in. I excitedly ripped it open and said to her “I got this for you“. She saw the coin with Eleanor‘s head and jovially said “cool thanks”. She reached in to her pocket to pull out the coin she had found. She looked at me and said “it’s the same coin.” Of course it is. Why would it not be?

That laundromat visit cost me $1.17 that I will probably never get back.

Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the more admirable first ladies, she certainly got involved in more worthy causes than most of them.
