a walk through the daisies
May. 24th, 2023 05:21 pmMeDad died in 2001, quite unexpectedly. A year or two later I met Mom for coffee. "Guess what I did today? Paid for my own funeral". I still was not comfortable with Dad's death so I opted to not discuss it with her. Fast forward to today. I am sure Mom does not have a tremendous amount of Earth Time left. Sooner than later we are going to have to deal with her death and final wishes. A couple weeks ago, out of the blue, I remembered this conversation . I asked Da Olda to go through Mom's filing cabinet to see if she could find anything. Nope. On a whim I emailed the funeral home that did Dad's service in '01. I knew it was a prayer but why not try? They called me a few minutes ago to tell me that YES, MeMum paid for her own funeral in 2001! I was floored. A full cremation. She over paid a bit for the death certificates, taxes and prayer cards. If the new total is above what she set aside we have to pay the balance. No probs. Mom shelled out $2309. A cremation today is roughly $5K. I am not happy to get this kind of news (it is kind of creepy) but I am relieved this is not another thing I have to worry about. In 2001 she was roughly the age I am now. She had the forethought and capital to pay for this. I cannot afford to fill my tank once a week.
Way to go, Lucy
