weeds in the flowerbed
Feb. 5th, 2023 04:10 pmI met up Da Younga Sista at The Unhappiest Place In America to pay a visit to MeMum. Found her in the big room waiting for lunch. We fed her full of Cheez-Its (She pointed to the bag and said "My favorite"), fig newtons, chocolate pudding and Girl Scout Peppermint Chocolate cookies. She is a bottomless pit, eating far more that she ever did prior to being ill. Her brain does not recognize when she has eaten too much. She pounded a shit ton of food before giving up. She let out a groan and finally said "I am full". Literally ten seconds later the attendant dropped off her tray of 'food' for lunch (Pureed hamburger, purred veggies and chalky mashed taters....Mmmmm!!). She was happy and animated. She made some silly faces and was goofy. With Alzheimer's peeps say ya got your good days, ya got your bad days. This was a good day. But of course this is what makes this this affliction so heartbreaking. She has very little cognitive functions but seeing her laugh and be silly means that something was firing correctly in her brain. But next time we see her she may be completely listless and unaware. Fuck you, Alzheimer's.
My favorite moment of the day--I no longer take pics of her. I got one last year as she was coloring in her book and she is smiling. In that photo you can still see some light. That's how I want to remember her. So I decided after that pic I would take no more. Da Sista on the other hand takes a dozen each time she is there. I get it. Sista took a pic of me as I made a dumb face (which is pretty much my face all the time). She showed it MeMum, who has awful vision. She squinted a bit and finally asked "Is that a dog in a hat?"
On some level she may have been right.
