Da Cripple Bus picked us up Friday from the grocery. To Erica and my surprise there was another passenger. An older gray haired lady. She introduced herself as Joanne. She had spent the morning volunteering at church as she does six days a week. I will never understand people who go to church to start with but people who go more than once a week truly baffle me. She volunteers for six and then attends on the seventh. If that’s what gets you through, more power to you.

Joanne to me-“We have multiple services during the week. Our most popular is on Sunday afternoon. Why don’t you come visit us at the First Raleigh Memorial Church downtown Raleigh”

Me-'Are y’all one of those churches who has a free buffet lunch after service?”

Joanne, all grins-“We don’t have free food but we have plenty of Jesus Christ!”

Me-“ I am sorry, Joanne, but free food is MY Jesus Christ.”

Her grin disappeared. She turned back in her seat and crossed her hands over her Bible. She did not speak to me for the rest of the ride.
