I am still saddened from the news of Mojo Nixon passing the other day. Many many moons ago, in the early 80s, my buddy Fat Bill moved in with a chemical engineering student named Jesse Bill. Jesse Bill was from Richmond and a great guy. One random Friday night I went over to their apartment to get high with them. Jesse Bill introduced me to his friend Kirby McMullen. We laughed and cut up all evening as Kirby played us some risqué songs on his guitar ( I can recall “Stuffin' Martha’s Muffin”, his ode to MTV VJ Martha Quinn. “ I Hate Banks” and “Gonna Put My Face On a Nuclear Bomb” ) Kirby explained he had an alter ego named Mojo Nixon and was busy recording his first album. A year or so later the album came out and Mojo began to make a name for himself. We remained friends throughout the 80s. Eventually he began doing commercials for MTV & moved out of the area. I ran into him again once in Chapel Hill in the early 2000s and he remembered me. He was at the Cat‘s Cradle, a well-known nightclub in Chapel Hill. I walked up to him and said “Hey Kirbs,” He replied “Yo, muddafugga.” He dropped his Mojo persona and slipped back into the soft-spoken Kirby that I knew and loved. We spent the evening chatting, drinking cheap beer and laughing. Ay evenings end, we shook hands and I knew I’d probably never see him again. I never did.
Rest in peace, Kirby.
Rest in peace, Kirby.
