a false sense of symmetry
Aug. 29th, 2023 06:22 pmEvery time I get to thinking we’re at peace with Da Law Talking Guys and Medicaid bullshit, I get reminded that it never ends. Last week we got a bill for a probate bond. It holds Da Olda Sista responsible for handling mom‘s estate correctly. We have to pay an insurance company as a promise we won’t misspend money. What do we get in return? Literally not a goddamn thing. Zip. Zero. Zilchers. Another typical bullshit insurance scam. Now here’s the kicker of this shebang...we don’t have enough money in the estate to pay for the bond. I had to spend $288 out of my pocket as a promise we will not misspend the $125 left in mom’s account.
It’s time for the year end inventory as well. The yearly nonsense of providing bank statements to the court for the same reason. I dropped off all the information that I had a couple weeks ago and the lawyers got to accounting. I received a bill from them earlier today. Between the accounting/procedural fees/court filing costs we were billed $892. Let that sink in. I have to pay the lawyers $892 to prove to the courts we did not misappropriate any of the remaining $125 in the account. We get one deposit a month (Social Security). We send that money to moms facility. We’re allowed to keep $30 a month from the Social Security payment for “supplies” (how generous!). We shuffle that off to pay the lawyers. Since last August these have been the only three transactions coming from Lucy’s checking account yet I have to pay almost $900 to prove to the court we have been good stewards. Not to mention the additional $288 for the bond. Our lawyer bills have reached close to $6000. We originally gave them a $5000 stipend which they blew through in the first few weeks. Since putting MeMom in the lockdown facility they have charged us $11,000. This is after Medicaid made us spend all of mom‘s retirement accounts to qualify. My name is on the lawyer bills so I am on the hook for this. I wanted to spend the rest of my life debt free but it looks like I will be paying these fucking vampires until I am the same age my mom is now. Fucking Alzheimer's.
