We had ‘night training’ for the Holiday Thang on Tuesday. I rolled into Da Park around 6PM and said hello to a bunch of the peeps. A few minutes later Not Scott gave an overview of the event. All the people involved with this class had at least part of train training. We all went outside and were taught how to use a light rig called a Pelican Lamp. After each of the supervisors were taught how to set up the device, the employees had to do the same. I went first and nailed it. After I completed the setup I walked over to Scott and asked “Is there any chance my suspension will be lifted in time for the event or should I just resign myself to waiting until next year?”. He cryptically responded ‘Well, you’re here, right? That is by design”.

We then walked to a light tower and learned how to use it. Then to the train. Not Scott gave a small speech about the dangers of the night drive. He then requested we break into 2 groups….train operators and those who did not complete training and would act as “track monitors”. I caught his attention and asked which group I should join. He pointed to the train drivers. Huzzah!

Our training consisted of making two laps around the track. On the first lap the track monitors would flag down either the engine or the caboose. The person working it would have to stop the train, go to the track monitors to see what the issue was. We then had to resolve the issue by radioing the appropriate people. Then back on the train to the station. That was followed another lap where the other employee would have to resolve a different situation. There were seven operators at the training. I went second. I haven’t driven since August of this year and made a couple of small mistakes but overall it felt good to drive the train again. I then sat in the back for 10 rides while others took their turn.

In the back of my mind I thought my punishment would be to work on Christmas decorations until the Holiday Thang. It looks like I may have been right. Thang runs from December 1 through the 19th. If I was trained on how to drive at night I would imagine I will be getting some shifts during that period. After all the work I have done with decorations it would be nice to finally get back to the part of the job I enjoy most. Fingers crossed!
