I have experienced that both literally and metaphorically.
Back when my kid was small, and I was working nights at a bakery I didn't get very much sleep. Sometimes while doing a mechanical task at work, I would have the sensation of waking up. At work. On my feet. It was a weird feeling. Also, sometimes at my last job when I'd walk over the hill in the middle of the night I would arrive at the bakery with no memory of actually walking there.
